The evolving field of equine-assisted activities spans mental and emotional benefits. For example, research from the Heart Math Institute suggests that equine therapy can decrease issues like maladaptive behavior, anxiety, and depression while improving desirable feelings and skills such as:
I am a trauma informed coach and my sessions with horses follow a systematic process based on the IFEEL method of Equine Facilitated Psycho-Traumatology (EFPT). EFPT is as effective supporting a client with personal growth as it is resolving trauma. EFPT supports a client in stage 1 of the tri-phasic trauma treatment model to establish safety and stabilisation and in stage 3 to help a client find their new self.
EFPT is effective both as a solo intervention and in conjunction with other mental health interventions, and benefits individuals with their mind body connection, boundaries, emotional intelligence and relationships. EFPT offers individuals the opportunity to explore the discussions from their counselling sessions with the horses who give immediate bio-psycho-social feedback.

The use of horses within human mental health services has occurred since the 1950s (Wang et al, 2015). Equine human interventions are increasing in popularity within human counselling and behavioural development programmes. However, despite this, few evidence based studies evaluating the impact of these studies on their human participants exist.
To measure the impact of the IFEEL Method 3-day EFPT programme on participants’ psychological health using an established tool: the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) (Evans et al, 2000)
